It has been a while since I have time to really enjoy Macau... this is a place that I spent most of my summer holidays during my childhood since most of my cousins live here... an interesting place too because of its Chinese & Portuguese mix...

Unlike Hong Kong, Macau hasn't really developed into a metropolitan during the ruling of the Portuguese, hence there are plenty of interesting artifacts to be found just walking around... the Portuguese little stone roads, the Portuguese churches just to name a few... the Portugueses uses Macau as the port not only for military and commercial, but also as a gateway to share the Gospel.

Had a busy week in China... was at Shanghai for 3 days and Xiamen for 3 days... My camera ended up my briefcase 99.9% of the trip... Only after all my meetings in Xiamen that I got a chance to walk around Xiamen for a few shoots...

Xiamen is my home home town; my Grandpa migrated from Xiamen to Macau during the 2nd World War... I must say it feels very different to be home home... I heard so much about it during my childhood... yet it is such an unknown to me...

This was taken on my trip in Tasmania in August... it was shot during my morning session at the Hobart harbour... shot all morning only to find out that my Lexar CF card is no longer readable... With the worst case in my mind, I got back to Toronto a few weeks later and learn about T.I.M data recovery from a friend of mine... gave them the card, and they got me back my photos. :) Highly recommended, if this kind of unfortunate incidents ever happens to you... they are highly professional, and they know their stuff...

My first time seeing this flower... after many years of planting... according to Shirley, it takes only 2 hours for this flower to fully bloom, and it looks the best an hour in... I was late, I took this at the 3 hour mark...

We enjoyed a rare full Lunar Eclipse on the darkest day of 2010. It is so rare that the next one will be on 2094. It was cold night, we were dressed like Eskimo and shot with our frozen fingers... It was quite a display I would say... Enjoy this amazing work of art by mother nature!

This was also my first sighting a male moose in the wild; I was lucky to see a few of them and I was lucky enough to witness two young males fighting for a female... What a trip!

Perseid Meteor Shower

I have a concept to shoot the Meteors with the star trails... I did see a few Meteors went pass the frame... I guess they weren't bright enough :( It would have been nice to have diagonal lines from the Meteor cutting across the star trails.... oh well... I tried...

Aurora... in the GTA

680 Alert! Aurora... in the GTA!
Heard from 680news that the GTA will be under solar attack... to defend our beloved city... a team of brave photographers head out for some shooting!
We went north to Lake Simcoe and my camera had this awesome view of the aurora (the Northern Lights)... Note: it is my camera that saw it... at 30 second exposure... I can only barely see the green with my naked eye... But never-the-less, it is quite an experience to see the Northern Lights this south. I was lucky that I was able to include the Big Dipper into the composition... Enjoy!

Good Morning from the Smoky Mountains in Tennessee... We are staying at a cottage named 'Could Happen', but I think it should be renamed to 'Did Happen'! The morning sunrise this morning at the balcony was just beautiful... The staff told me bears are everywhere, but I haven't seen one yet... will let you all know... Lisbon, Portugal

I have been in Portugal for a few days now... Yesterday, Cherry asked me why I haven't been posting any photos... Well, I don't have my Mac here, and I shoot only RAW, and I don't want to download a RAW converter on my PC... but I totally forgot that I can actually shoot RAW + JPEG... finally remember that on my final day in Lisbon... SILLY ME! Lisbon is a very special place for me, I read about it before about the great discovery period of Portugal, and Lisbon is the root of it... Macau, was a colony of Portugal before 1999 (that was when China took back control of Macau). Did you know Portuguese's sailors first arrival to Macau was in 1514? This morning, I was at the square where the ships would have been moored, and I was imaging how proud it must have been at that time to be a Portuguese sailor... It also reminded me of a game that I loved when I was young, the 'Un-chartered Water' by Koei; visiting port to port in Europe, killing the pirates, trading goods and discovering new ports all over the world. I guess that is where I learnt my geography. For those who knows me, my parents were both from Macau... so, Lisbon has been on top of my travel list for quite sometime... I had a blast here! Loving every minutes of it... Enjoy this photo in memory of the Great Discovery period of the Portuguese.

Terracina, Italy

The business trip that sounded like a vacation... first stop - Terracina, Italy (http://www.terracina.eu/history.html). This is a little vacation town 1.5 hr south of Rome (by car). The local seafood here is amazing... fishes are freshly caught and nicely cooked. Unfortunately, I didn't have time to tour the historical town. Today, I will be heading to my second stop - Barcelona. Hope the volcanic ash would behave and not affect my travel plans!

The Urban Legend

Cherry just got herself a Canon SD980, so lately I have been dragging it everywhere... yesterday I got lucky, the falcon landed on the 9th floor (the balcony outside my office) again... so I got to play with P&S shooting on wildlife a little bit... I still don't know all the buttons on that P&S yet... but I hope it will get better soon, so I can capture what I see on a daily basis. Enjoy this Urban Legend for now!

Creepy Morning

The Winter Night Falls

Winter is definitely my shooting season... I love landscapes that are covered with the white stuff... many of you think I am crazy, maybe I am :) I love the softness and the texture of the winter landscape. I have been wanting to drive down to the Falls in Winter to take some winter scenery of one of the world's 7 natural wonders... I got my chance this week...
The little getaway to the Falls was great; we got our chance to just relax and do nothing :) and I got my chance to go shoot whenever I wanted... I still don't have a clear winter morning to shoot at... my luck this winter thus far :)... but so what, shooting is still fun... We stayed 2 nights at the Falls, shopped at the outlet down south, and we concluded our little getaway lunching at the restaurant at Peller Estate; we tried the tasting menu which comes with 4 courses with wine pairing for each course. The experience is exceptional (highly recommended if you are a wine lover).

Shortest Day of the year...

Today marks the shortest day of the year, also the official beginning of Winter! For some of you, the good news is the count down to Spring is now at 90 :) Thus far, this winter has been pretty strange... it is overcast every time I am out shooting... and there isn't much snow... I drove all the way to Aurora this morning, and the accumulation is still minimal... yet, south of the border, they are battling the biggest snow fall in years!

The sun got lazy this morning... on its shortest day!!! Fortunately, I bumped into Santa's place, so I spent a little time with his reindeers :)

First Frost...

I was forced to get out of my place at 7am this morning because of the power wash at my garage this morning... it dipped just below freezing last night, so I decided to check out Edwards Gardens to see if I am lucky enough to catch the first frost... I guess it is my lucky day... the only unfortunate part is that I forgot my reverse lens adapter at home, so I couldn't do any marco of the amazing frost. Maybe I will be obsessed enough to go back tomorrow morning! Will see :)

Foggy Late Fall...

It was a colorless late fall morning... it was foggy and dark... went out this morning hoping for a good sunrise... of coz the sun didn't co-operate, it was way too overcast for the ray to shine though the fog. This is part of the fun of photography, you never know what you will get until you get out there.

Annual Fall Visit to Algonquin...

This is yearly fall visit to Algonquin for the colorful maple... maybe we were one week too late this year... color was very orange and yellow instead of the red that I was expecting... still nice to get out and connect to nature.

It has been an very odd day, we experienced all sort of weathers today, from sunny to cloudy to overcast to hailing to snowing... you name it we got it... and it is quite cold for this time of year! I guess winter is upon us...

Fall is one of my favourite seasons because of its colors. Today was a special day, it rained the whole night last night, so the air is very fresh and color is rich this fine morning. This was taken at the Bruce Mills Conservation Area as the sun was rising.

Haven't been going out for shooting for quite a while, as I was quite busy with wedding and stuff last few weeks... finally got a chance to shoot last Saturday. The weather co-operated with some amazing lighting. It rained for the whole day, but it clear up somewhat near sunset. @Leo Kam called around 6pm letting me know there was a rainbow out there, I rushed out from Starbuck with my camera and didn't see the rainbow. On my way home, I saw this light at the East Don Parkland (at Leslie and Finich); I can't resist the light, so I parked and took this shot before heading home. I was late for dinner :) but so what :)

This was the dark alley just next to the Pike Market in Seattle. The market were closed, and this is where the night life begins... I find it quite un-comforting as I was walking down the alley. The was taking with a 30 sec exposure. Hope you feel what I feel... :)

Washington State 2009

Our vacation of the year took us to Washington State, USA. We went there in search of great local seafood and great nature scenery, we certainly got all that we asked for.

Our first stop was San Juan Island, all I can say is what a great place for local seafood (oysters, shrimps, clams, and crabs just a name a few). We went to Westcott bay for oysters everyday while we were on the island, they are so fresh and they are so reasonably priced. We also went out Orca watching on Captain Jim Maya's fleet; we saw the J-pod the day we went. All in all, San Juan Island is a great place to be, with great food and homelike hospitality.

Our next stop is Mt. St. Helens; it is still an active volcano. It was last erupted May 18, 1980. That was the deadliest and most economically destructive volcanic event in the history of the United States. You may read about it here.

After the side trip to St. Helens, we headed for a few day of hiking at Mt. Rainier National Park. The national park is very nice with a lot of well marked hiking trails for all levels. We had a few days of scenic hikes and photography.

The final leg of our trip, we drove to Seattle for more seafood and coffee. Coffee at Pike Market were excellent. Seafood in general in Seattle is a little too deep fried for our taste, but they are indeed fresh. All in all a very pleasant stay at Seattle.

We are onto our final leg of our trip, after a few days of raw nature at Mt. Rainier, we are now back to civilization. We arrived at Seattle 9:30am, boy, did we miss Mt. Rainier. This photo was taken on our final evening of the trip at Mt. Rainier. The sun just set, and the clouds were moving in... at first we were hoping for some star trailing after the evening shooting session... but the weather didn't co-operate. Anyhow, we had a great time at Mt. Rainier; a lot of hiking, a lot of photography and a lot of good food. More to share as I finish processing my photos.

Whale Watching at San Juan Island

Had a wonderful couple of days at San Juan Island (first part of our little vacation to the Washington State). Cherry and I went out shooting this morning; then we went for Orca watching, we saw the J-pod this morning, this was one of the shots that I took during the trip. Hope you like it... unfortunately, I have to crop it quite a bit to get this composition... that is all I could do with the 200mm... After the Orca tour, we were off to the oyster farm for some fresh ones :) they were so yummy! More to share in the up coming days :) Enjoy this for now!

One Summer Morning...

Venture into the Unknown

This was taken on the side of the road (on 9th Line), up north, on our typical shooting session. It had been raining quite a bit of late, so all the snails are out... This was taken with the reverse lens adapter with the AF 50mm setup. Hope you like it!

Summer Lotus

I have been trying to capture this great flower numerous time... as I usually shoot real early in the morning, whenever I walk by the lotus pond, I always see lotus bulb, but never the bloom... Last saturday, the day I shot that rainbow (below this blog entry), I saw a photographer at Richmond Green... we chat a little, and I learned that lotus doesn't bloom early in the morning (silly me), it only blooms after 9am when the sun is hot. On my day off this Monday, I went to Richmond Green again, this time at 10am... and was rewarded with this lotus photo of my liking. I had to try a few things to get this photos... at first, I shot a lot of the lotus from the top... and I find them to be quite boring... then I decided to try something new... I hold the camera almost to the water level while lying down on the wooden bridge over the lotus pond... with my arm fully extended, I finally go this shot that I like (the light was very hash that day, so I had to look for one with leaf shade to diffuse the light a little).

Rainbow at Sunrise

Went out for 2 sessions over the weekend as the weather was nice... caught this rare rainbow at sunrise at Richmond Green on Saturday. I decided to zoom in to the rainbow and see what kind of details I can get... this is a shot with the AF80-200mm f/2.8 at 200mm. Hope you like it.

Canada Day Shooting

Planned for a morning photography session with Leo on Canada Day... the weather didn't co-operate in the morning... but the afternoon was quite nice; it was mostly cloudy, but the clouds act as a jumbo soft box for me... so went out to my favorite Edward's Gardens to catch some macro action with my beloved reverse lens adapter.

It was overcast on Sunday afternoon... wind was calm, so it was a perfect day for close up and macro. Went to Edwards Gardens to check out if there are new blooms... caught this few at the garden, hope you like them. I only bought my 50mm with the reverse lens adapter. I am trying to see if I can use the AF 50mm as my walk around, and it's reverse lens for macro work... still testing how usable it is... will let you know :)

Trip to Goderich 2009

I was at Goderich, Ontario on the weekend. Goderich a historical town with a lot of old historical buildings. This was taken on our hike around town. I was attracted by the lines created by the shadows. It was around midday, not my typical shooting time. But I think the light works for this shot (esp. the crazy shadows were created by the midday sun). Hope you like it as much as I do! Enjoy!

Too Good Pond

Decided to try something different in term of post processing... This was shot at Too Good Pond in Markham, Ontario on Friday evening near sunset. I think the low saturation works very well on this shot. The tiny pixels of green are very refreshing.

Tulip - Just for the Color

These days I am obsessed to shot with the reverse lens adapter. It is so much work, but so much fun... it is like you have to earn every photos. It was windy today, so it was quite a challenge to focus on the flowers (let alone getting any good shots) out of today's session. Here is one that I like... just for the color... the red contrasted with the deep green of this tiny tulip. Hope you like it.

Spring Flowers

It has been quite rainy this weekend; luckily Saturday morning was quite nice. I went to Edwards Gardens to see if the blooming season has started... sure enough, a few flowers had started blooming! YAH! With the addition of the reverse lens adapter that I got from my brother on Saturday, I am all ready for blooming season :)

My First Marco...

Testing out the reverse lens mount for the first time as a cheap marco lens. Let me know what you think! I seriously think this is pretty workable, as long as the subject doesn't move.

Technical Details:
Nikon D80; AF 50mm f/1.8D (reversed); f/4; 1/10; ISO 100; WB Cloudy; manual focus on tripod

How to shoot with reverse lens mount?
1) use a tripod
2) set f-stop to biggest aperture (in my case f/1.8) and manual focus (i.e. set the subject distance by moving back and forth - use the focus ring to fine tune focus)
3) set f-stop for desire depth of field
4) set shutter speed for correct exposure
5) fire your shutter :)

Refreshing Spring Sunset

Got the perfect light this Saturday morning on this shot of the house with the full moon; the windows were facing east with the reflection of the colorful twilight, while the moon was setting and beginning to turn yellowish. This was shot near Regional Hwy 47 & 2nd Concession Rd (Uxbridge, Ontario). Enjoy!
